Belmont Stakes This Saturday

http://www.nyc.gov/html/sports/gif/belmont-stakes-05.gif

For the 29th year in a row the winner of the Belmont Stakes won’t be fighting for the Triple Crown, but that doesn’t mean the excitement level won’t be high. The first two races of the Triple Crown season have been fantastic, and the Belmont will most likely not disappoint.

The first leg of the Triple Crown, the Kentucky Derby was won by Street Sense. In one of the most exciting finishes ever in the Kentucky Derby, Street Sense battled back from second to last place to win. Sure, horses have made up ground like this before, but 99 percent of the time they come from the outside to do it. What made that even more spectacular is he did it in the most watched horse race in the world. Street Sense hugged the rail, and if just one other rider would have noticed they would have been able to cut him off, instead he rode right into victory lane.

Curlin snuck away with a victory in the Preakness by defeating Street Sense by half of a head. In the Preakness, Street Sense had once again came from the back of the pack, and seemed to have a lock on trying for the Triple Crown. Curlin, who was making only his fourth start, finished third in the Kentucky Derby. The inexperienced Curlin has shot his way up to the top of the odds maker’s boards as a clear contender to take home the Belmont Stakes. But, even thought Street Sense can probably make the Belmont a two horse race, there are others who will contend for sure.

One major thing that will be different between this race and the others is the number of competitors. The Kentucky Derby had 20 entries, making it crowded for everyone. The Belmont Stakes, at a mile and a half, is the longest track of the Triple Crown Tracks and will only have 11 starters. This means the field is wide open, and every horse will be running in full stride.

One of those horses that will look to take the thunder away from Street Sense and Curlin is Nobiz Like Shobiz. Nobiz Like Shobiz came into the Kentucky Derby winning four races in six starts. Unfortunately he got caught up in the traffic in the Kentucky Derby and, without being able to make a move, finished a disappointing tenth.

Tiago is another horse who has been disappointing in the Triple Crown season, but came in as a dark horse to begin with. The half-brother to 2005 Kentucky Derby Giacomo, finished seventh in this year’s Derby and did not run in the Preakness. Much like Curlin, he was a novice to big time racing, with only 5 career starts. But one of his wins came at the Santa Anita Derby at 50-1 odds. He will most likely still be a long shot at the Belmont, but he is definitely worth keeping an eye on.

Belmont Park is located in Elmont, New York, and because of it being the longest distance of all the Triple Crown horses is also known as the “Test of Champions.” The most famous moment to ever come out of Belmont Park is when in 1973 Secretariat won the race by 31-lengths and set a world record time of 2:24.

It’s unsure that a horse will ever win by that margin again, but what is sure is that Curlin and Street Sense have started a nice rivalry that could come to a fantastic conclusion this Saturday at the Belmont Stakes!

Barbaro feeling better

Barbaro
Barbaro showed a promising first step after suffering a significant setback from laminitis when X-rays showed no additional complications in either hind leg.

Barbaro co-owner Gretchen Jackson said Barbaro was not in pain, feeling better and had a “decent night.” Barbaro suffered a significant setback because of laminitis — a painful, often fatal disease — in his left hind foot.

ichardson removed damaged tissue from the hoof, and afterward the bay colt was placed in a protective sling in his ICU stall at the University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center. Barbaro has been rehabilitating here since shattering three bones in his right hind leg just a few strides into the Preakness on May 20.

The news came as a jolt, especially since his owners Gretchen and Roy Jackson and Richardson recently said they were hopeful the colt would be released from the hospital, perhaps by the end of the month.

Barbaro had become uncomfortable on his left hind foot in recent days and the cast was removed after some new separation on the inside portion of his hoof was found.

Dr. Scott Morrison, who applied the cast on Jan. 3, called the latest development “a bump in the road” and said Barbaro “can possibly overcome it.

Though Morrison wasn’t present at New Bolton when Richardson removed the loose tissue, he believes Barbaro’s condition has not regressed or gone “back to square one.”

Gretchen Jackson brought Barbaro fresh grass and said the colt’s appearance was “not as bright” when she saw him Wednesday morning. But, she said, the colt had visibly improved later in the day when her husband, Roy, visited.

The cast change could have caused some inflammation, said Dr. Kathleen Anderson, Barbaro’s attending vet when the horse was racing and stabled in trainer Michael Matz’s barn at the Fair Hill Training Center in Elkton, Md.

Anderson said Barbaro has proved he was strong enough to overcome his latest medical obstacle.

After his injury in the Preakness, Barbaro developed severe laminitis, a potentially fatal disease caused by uneven weight distribution in the limbs. The result was that 80 percent of his left hind hoof was removed in mid July.

Just over a week ago, Richardson said Barbaro’s right hind was getting stronger and should eventually be healthy enough to allow the colt to live a comfortable, happy life.

But he also warned: “Barbaro’s left hind foot, which had laminitis, remains a more formidable long-term challenge. The foot must grow much more for him to have a truly successful outcome.”

Still, the Jacksons and Richardson remained optimistic Barbaro could be on a Kentucky farm by the end of January.

The disease, called laminitis or founder, involves inflammation and structural damage to tissue that bonds the horse’s bone to the inner wall of the hoof.

The ending of cyberspace as a “government-free” territory

This is a very interesting article, it shows the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006, from the UK point of view.

WHEN Congress banned online gambling in the USA last week, in one fell swoop they declared economic war on Britain while simultaneously ending the notion of cyberspace as a “government-free” territory.

It is estimated that British-owned online gambling companies who specialise in poker – a game 50 million Americans play regularly either in person or on the worldwide web – lost 75 per cent of their revenue overnight when the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006 was passed.

Shares in companies such as PartyGaming, SportingBet and 888.com – many of whose managers are Scots – plummeted, while shares in UKBetting, which specifically avoided doing business in the USA over fears of online gambling’s legality, rose by 11 per cent.

President Bush has still to sign the bill into law, but he actively supported it and with mid-term elections due, there is little chance of the president turning down something which appeases the vital right-wing Christian “moral majority”. Many state governments were also worried about the effect that online gambling was having on income for their lucrative lotteries, so even liberal governors are happy with this Draconian move.

But Congress’s decision reeks of hypocrisy, not least because now American teenagers cannot smoke, drink or play poker online, but they can own guns in some states and they can certainly die for their country in Iraq. The US government formally protested when China started censoring American-based internet search engines, but by using the device of stopping payments to internet gambling companies, they have effectively made the Federal government an internet policeman as far as gambling is concerned.

Congress also allowed a curious exemption. Online betting on horse racing is still allowed, and that could be good news for the British racing and betting industries, including betting exchanges.

A spokesman for one betting exchange operator said: “Exchanges could see this ban coming, as our own legality and existence has been challenged there. It seems like a disaster for those firms who dealt mostly in online poker, but the exemption for horse racing could be very good news for British racing and online bookmakers as well as exchanges. If the industry gets its act together, there could be a big future in broadcasting our racing to the USA and taking bets online from over there. After all, we now know they’re legal.

“You can now see American racing on satellite television here in the UK and bet on it every night, so why not do it vice-versa and have Americans betting on our racing?”
