NCAA Football Week 10 Picks:East Carolina vs. UCF

Remember when East Carolina was the talk of the nation with talks even coming that they would end up in a big bowl game of the season?  Funny what a month can do to a season.  Wins against Virginia Tech and West Virginia started the year for the Pirates, but after a win against Tulane they dropped three straight, including a loss to Virginia, meaning Carolina won’t hold a sweet against the Virginians this year.  They’ve since bounced back against Memphis.  In fact, they are still in first place in the C-USA East standings, with a 2-1 record and a 4-3 overall record.

NCAA Football Week 10 Picks:Tennessee vs. South Carolina

With about twenty good games going on this weekend one that slips under the radar is Tennessee vs. South Carolina.  Both teams have been rated high this season, but playing in the tough conference that they do, the SEC, and also having a very tough out of conference record, they have both fell out of the top-25.  The Tennessee Volunteers are 3-5, and 1-4 and their head coach Phillip Fullmer is potentially out of a job if he can’t turn this ship around, and quick.  The Volunteers have alternated wins and loses in their last four, meaning if my math is right, they’ve gone 2-2.  The only time they’ve really been manhandled this year is when number two in the country Alabama came into Tennessee and beat them from pillar to post on their own field 29-9.  Many people were actually picking Tennessee to win that game.  To be fair, four of their five losses have came to ranked teams, and their other loss, the first game of the season, was to UCLA at home.  UCLA has since gone on to lay an egg, so to speak, but the emotion was high in that one, and Tennessee was unable to leave a winner, setting the tone for their entire season.

NCAA Football Week 9 Picks(3) Penn State vs. (9) Ohio State

Ohio State gets another chance to jump right back into the national title race when they host the third ranked Penn State Nittany Lions.  This will be there second chance to cement their squad among the best.  The first time, an early season matchup against the USC Trojans didn’t turn out so well, with State going down 35-3.  However, there quarterback situation seems to have turned around to a positive, as they have won all there games since then, including a 45-7 drubbing of Michigan State, at Michigan.  That was quite the way to warm up for a Penn State team who has looked a little shaky lately.

NCAA Football Week 9 Picks: Minnesota vs. Purdue

One of the bigger surprises in the Big Ten conference this season has been the play of the Minnesota Golden Gophers.  They have started the season with a 6-1 record, and have worked there way into the top-25 national rankings, currently sitting at #24.  There only loss of the season came to the hands of Ohio State, in a somewhat competitive 34-21 loss.

NCAA Football 2008 Week 8 Picks: Michigan vs. (3) Penn State

Michigan is in the middle of one of their worst seasons in years.  They have started this season 2-4, losing to a MAC team at home for the first time in the entire history of the school.  Their opening season loss to Utah at home might have given us a sign of things to come, but Utah has since proven it’s worth.  But, then two weeks later Michigan traveled to South Bend to be defeated by a Notre Dame team that is having an up and down season.  However, things seemed to be turning around when they beat then ranked number nine Wisconsin in the big house.  Since then, things have been entirely down hill losing to first Illinois, and then of course Toledo.  This week they have to travel to Penn State to take on a time that seems ready to challenge for a big BCS game, maybe even the championship.

NCAA Football Week 8 Picks: Hawaii vs. Boise St (15)

Boise State is in the middle of another good season, and if they remain undefeated they can make it a great season by perhaps earning their shot at another BCS Bowl Game.  Their success seems like it can continue for at least three more years, as freshman quarterback Kellen Moore seems like the read deal.  This season he has already passed for 1,335 yards and ten touchdowns.  In Boise State’s only game against a well known opponent, Oregon, Moore played his best, throwing for 386 yards and three touchdowns.  While Boise State can’t get caught in any “trap” game situations, it appears that they could very well be undefeated when they host Fresno State at home in the last game of the season.  With the college football season turning into another crazy one, who knows how high the Broncos can sore before everything is sorted out.

NCAA Football Week 7 Picks: Utah State at San Jose State

In a battle of teams looking to take their programs to the next level at some point in the near future, the San Jose State Spartans will play host to Utah State this Saturday.  Just three years ago San Jose State was rated literally the worst team in the country, but this year they are off to a 3-2 start, and looking to make a bowl game.  In 2006 they finished with nine wins, but last year they were only able to muster out five wins, narrowly missing a bowl game.  With 1-4 Utah State coming to town, they have a decent chance of getting win number four.  They lost both of the games they were expected to against Nebraska and Stanford, but they played both of those games tough, showing the WAC conference that they too can play a little football.  They have a solid running back tandem in senior Yonus Davis and Freshman Brandon Rutley.  Both players are averaging over five yards per carry.  For now, Boise State appears to be top dog in the WAC, and rightfully so, but San Jose State seems to be bridging the gap.

NCAA Football Week 7 Picks: Louisville vs. Memphis

Louisville will try to stay within one game of the leaders in the Big East when they travel to Memphis to take on the Tigers of conference USA.  Louisville, sitting at 2-2 has had an up and down season to this point.  They opened the season with a 26-2 loss to Kentucky, but bounced back with a lopsided win against Tennessee Tech, 51-10.  They then beat Kansas State in a tough game, 38-29, but then loss to one of the big surprises in the Big East conference this year, the Connecticut Huskies.  The Huskies were in the top-25 until this past week when they were beat by UNC rather convincingly, so that isn’t an awful loss.  The Big East appears to be wide open this year, with every team in the league losing against one game this season.  Currently Pittsburgh sits on top of the standings with a 2-0 league record.  The offense has been steady behind the play of senior quarterback Hunter Cantwell, another in the long line of good quarterbacks who have recently suited up for the Cardinals.  His TD ratio of 5-5 could be approved on, but with the exception of the first game of the year, his numbers have been pretty solid.

NCAA Football Week 6 Picks: San Diego State vs. TCU

TCU is sitting right outside of the Top-25 after losing to Oklahoma 35-10 last weekend.  They shouldn’t feel too bad, because, well, there is a good chance everybody will lose to Oklahoma this year.  Despite that, TCU still looks to have one of the better defenses in the nation.  In their first four games of the year they gave up only 31 points.  In two games they will get to challenge number 8 BYU, but first they have to get by San Diego State at home and Colorado State on the road.

NCAA Football Week 6 Picks Football: Cincinnati vs. Marshall

An interesting Conference USA game will take place Friday when the 3-1 Cincinnati Bearcats, travel to West Virginia to take on the Marshall Thundering Herd.  Marshall has one of the more exciting freshman quarterbacks to come along in a while, in the form of Mark Cann.  Despite completing only 50 percent of his passes, Cann has passed for 943 yards and five touchdowns.  Marshall has had a tough schedule to start the year, which will be hard for any freshman quarterback anywhere, but the future looks bright for this kid.
