NCAA Football Week 5 Picks: (8) Alabama at (3) Georgia

In a very intriguing early match-up in the SEC, the Alabama Crimson Tide travel to Georgia to take on the Bulldogs.  Alabama has been a surprise this season, a year when many experts thought they would have a bad season.  It’s true, being in the very tough SEC, it could change in an instant, but so far they are 4-0, and seemed prime for their chance to beat a national champion pre-season favorite, Georgia.  Alabama turned heads the opening game of the season when they traveled to Clemson and defeated them 34-10.  Clemson was being called a national title contender all pre-season, a though immediately spoiled by Alabama.  After defeated Tulane and Western Kentucky they traveled to Arkansas, in what was expected to be a tough game.  Alabama defeated them 49-14.  For the third time in the season they will have a very tough road contest.

NCAA Football Week 5 Picks: (1) USC vs. Oregon State

Sometimes the polls are a bit premature when determining the rankings of teams early in the season.  After all, the games aren’t played on paper.  But, the USC Trojans have done everything they can to prove that they are very well worthy of the number one rankings, as they have looked simply impressive the first few games of the season.  For starters, they have scored 87 points while only allowing 10 the entire season.  The first game of the season they traveled cross country to beat up Virginia 52-7.  For their next game they hosted The Ohio State Buckeyes, and what has been one of the most looked forward to games for the past couple of years.  USC quickly made this game a formality, beating the Buckeyes 35-3.  Junior quarterback Mark Sanchez has looked impressive early on, passing for seven touchdowns and just two interceptions.

College Football Week 4 Picks: (6) LSU at (10) Auburn

There are two thoughts that immediately come to mind when you think of the Auburn Tigers, one good, and one negative. The good one is that they appear to have a very solid defense, something they will need against LSU. The second thought is that they seem to have a questionable offense, also something they will need against LSU. Auburn escaped against Mississippi State with a score that resembled a baseball game more than a football game, 3-2. The only score of the game for Auburn came in the second quarter on a 35-yard field goal by Wes Byrum, which also ended up being the game winner. To its credit Mississippi State was playing at home and was undefeated. But, things certainly don’t get easier for the Tigers, despite being at home to play LSU. Also, for the fourth game in a row to start the season the Tigers play another undefeated team. The offense looked good in it’s first two games, scoring 71 points, but that was against Louisiana-Monroe and Southern Miss.

College Football Picks Week 4: (21) West Virginia at Colorado

The 21st ranked West Virginia Mountaineers look to get their season back on track by beating the Colorado Buffalo’s Thursday night in Boulder.  That task won’t be an easy one.  Colorado has enjoyed a nice schedule at the beginning of the season, with the WVU game being their 3rd home game in a row to start the new year.  In week one they defeated in-state rivals Colorado State 38-17.  In week two they prevailed in a tougher than expected test against Eastern Washington, 31-24.  The offense has looked solid in both games.  Quarterback Cody Hawkins has started the season passing for 475 yards and two touchdowns.  The running game tandem of freshmen Darrell Scott and Rodney Stewart are averaging nearly 4.5 yards a carry.  Both of these young men seemingly have a bright future awaiting them.

NCAA Football Picks 2008 (3) Oklahoma vs. Washington

The National Champion minded Oklahoma Sooners have opened the season by putting up 57 points against Chattanooga and 52 points against Cincinnati.  The 57-2 win against Chattanooga isn’t really a surprise, but the 52-26 win was a little more lopsided then some expected.  The game was close for the first half, but then Oklahoma exploded for 24 unanswered points to put the game to bed.  They bring that high powered offense to the northwest when they take on the 0-2 Washington Huskies.

NCAA Football 2008 Picks: (13) Kansas vs. (19) South Florida

Early season contests between two ranked teams are often hard to assess because neither team has played anyone good yet and there is a chance that neither one of them is good, as well.  There are members of the media that have suggested that we shouldn’t even have rankings until at least the 6th weeks, so you can at least have a feel for how the team is after seeing them actually play a few meaningful games.  A game that might fit into that criteria is the game this week between the Kansas Jayhawks and the South Florida Bulls.

College Football Picks: Miami at Florida

The ACC as a whole is looking like they may be in the midst of a bad season as a whole.  For starters, a preseason national champion contender Clemson was shellacked against Alabama at home.  Also, last year’s ACC champion, the Virginia Tech Hokies were defeated by East Carolina.  Things don’t get any better this week, when the young Miami Hurricanes travel to Gainsville to take on the Florida Gators.  While the Gators are favored by three touchdowns to win the game, there are many experts who feel that Miami has to be at least competitive to try to make up for some of the negative attention the conference is getting as a whole.

NCAA Football: South Carolina at Vanderbilt

The South Carolina Gamecocks looked like a team to be reckoned with against the North Carolina Wolfpack last week, especially in the second half.  Starting quarterback Tommy Beecher threw four interceptions to start the game, but backup Chris Smelley came in and completed all five of his passes while leading his team on two touchdown drives.  Smelley has been named the starter for the game against Vandy, due to what is being cited as a tired arm of Beecher, but it’s being suggested that tired arm or not, Smelly would be the starter in the SEC opener against Vanderbilt.
