College Football: Utah at Michigan

Imagine you are the Utah Utes and you have to go to the “Big House” to face the Michigan Wolverines in your season opener.  Not a fun thought.  New Wolverine coach Rich Rodriquez will be looking to make a big splash opening night, and the targets are Utah.  Chad Henne and Mike Hart both return to Michigan for their senior year.  Both of these players look like they will be either a first or second round draft pick next season, but would like to end their final season at Michigan on a good note.  Henne through for over 1900 yards last season, including 17 touchdowns with nine interceptions.  Hart is one of the most explosive players in the nation, and should be at the Heisman Trophy presentation at the end of the year.  He averaged 5.1 yards per carry last year en route to a 1361 yard season.

Utah knows it has a tough chore ahead of them, and that’s why they are clear underdogs going into this game.  Last year Michigan lost to Appalachian State, but managed to have a very good season after that.  I don’t expect Michigan to have the same kind of let down here then they did last year.  I expect Michigan to win this one by about 20 or more.

College Football: Temple at Army

These two teams always seem to be going by the motto, “better luck next year,” but with a victory here can start the season off at 1-0.  Last year the Temple Owls started the season 0-5, but towards the end of the season they started to pull things together, finishing the season with four wins.  The four wins in seven game stretch is actually one of the better strings they’ve been able to put together the last few years, and it’s a success they would like to see continued into the new season.  The Army Black Knigts did about the opposite in their season.  They won three games in their first six games, but lost their last six games of the season, most of them by a large margin.

College Football: Oregon State vs. Stanford

It’s hard enough to start the season on the road, but to also start the season with a conference game is almost unheard of.  Junior quarterback for Oregon State Sean Canfield will do his best to lead his team to a semi-upset to start the season.  Canfield returns after a so-so season statistically, having scored nine touchdowns but also throwing 15 interceptions.  The team must have been happy with last year’s results, going 9-4, including a bowl win over Maryland.  They would like to be able to better those results, and they hope running back Yvenson Bernard can improve on his good results last year, including 13 touchdowns.  The Senior Bernard is backed up by speedster James Rodgers, who in 50 carries last year averaged an amazing 11.7 yards a season.  He’s small, but when he gets in the open field he is a terror.

College Football: North Carolina State at South Carolina

The college football season has finally returned, and to start things off we have a battle between the North and the South.  The North Carolina State Wolfpack are led by Senior quarterback Daniel Evans.  Last year Evans had an up and down season, throwing 12 touchdowns, but also throwing for 13 interceptions.  In the tough conference of the ACC, they will need better than that from Evans to expect to compete.  The Wolfpacks rushing game looks like it could be decent. They bring back Senior Jamelle Eugene who rushed for 667 yards last year on 3.9 yards per carry and fellow Senior Andre Brown, who found the end zone five times last year.

Olympic Basketball at its Finest

We’ve had the Dream Team, not it’s time for the Redeem Team.  This years USA basketball team is looking to return to Gold medal forum after an embarrassing number of losses in world competition.  The USA team looked in good forum against Yao Ming and host country China with a resounding 101-70 victory on Sunday evening.  The game started close, with China just a few points down near the end of the second quarter, but the USA continued to be a strong second half team, making the final margin 31 points.
