The MLB All-Star is one of the biggest sporting events of the summer season. Making it even more special this year is the fact that it will be the last ever “Mid-summer classic,” to be played at Historic Yankee Stadium, as they will be opening their new stadium next year. While the “House that Ruth Built,” will soon be closing, it doesn’t mean there won’t be some more historic events in the half of season it has left, starting with this game. One of the things that made Ruth so special was his home run hitting, and before the game even starts, the Home Run Derby will take place on Monday, one of the most exciting exhibition events in all of sports.
While a lot of the big names have either bowed out of the event, it’s still a spectacle. The biggest name to announced they won’t be participating is the Yankee’s own Alex Rodriguez. It would have been special to see the current home run king try to win the derby, but I think fans would rather see him healthy in the season, the to risk an injury during the derby. Other players who will be missing the derby because of injury Alfonso Soriano and David Ortiz. Same thing applies, their fans would rather see them healthy then risk further injury in the Derby. Those confirmed for the event are major league leading home run hitter Chase Utley, Dan Uggla, Grady Sizemore, Lance Berkman, and Josh Hamilton, all vowing for their first Home Run Derby title. Three more players are left to fill out the derby roster, and are expected to be announced soon.
Another event that takes place before the main dish is the Futures Game. The Futures game features the best players from the minor leagues getting a chance to play in front of MLB fans, hopefully showcasing their skill. Players in this game that have done well have gone on to successful major league careers. Also, it gives these players to play a game in front of a Major League crowd, which helps prepares them for when they are called up to show their stuff at the top level of the game.
Then of course, there is the All-Star game itself, which will take place Tuesday. The National league will be looking for their first victory in the game since 1996. Since then, with the exception of the famous tie, the American league has dominated the series. The American league would like at least one more victory, so they can close Yankee Stadium with a win for their home fans. Of course, the winner of the game gets home field advantage for their league team in the World Series, and with no clear cut favorite this year, home field advantage can be the deciding factor on determining the winner.
