The early years
Built with the purpose to be a gravel-and-tar track, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, was founded in 1909. Then it was hosting only some small events. This was before the time, when the owners decided to move the focus to only one major event.
After several death cases, caused by the unsteady and unstable racing surface, the principal owner Carl G. Fisher urged a paving of the track with 3.2 million bricks. When an 805 km (or 500 miles) race was created, this allowed a rapid acquisition and status of privileges for automobile contests.
The first 500 miles were passed from Ray Harroun in 1911 on the so called “Memorial Day”, May 30. His car was a “Wasp” Marmon. The helpful for each driver rear-view mirror was invented by this pilot and especially for that race. With the help of this invention and because of his professionalism, he became the first driver to win the Indianapolis 500 race.
At the same day, over $80,200 were received in a form of admission for the race. Each of the spectators paid 1$. This guided to establishing an annual tradition. The historical facts show that the most of these people didn’t believe that Harroun will be the first pilot, who wins the race. They even thought that he was a “hazard” type of person. The reason was that only he didn’t have a riding mechanic, who could assist him about the traffic and the oil pressure.
Despite the fact that the first race was won by an American, who had his own American car, the European companies of France and Italy didn’t delay to create their own models for participating in the contests. These were the famous then and now Peugeot and Fiat.
The most interesting part here is that they achieved their goals and became winners in the period between 1913 and 1919. The dominance of the native manufacturers and drivers was regained after the World War I. One of the best engineers during that time was the famous Harry Arminius Miller, who claimed to be the most competitive among the so called “post-war builders”.
Fortunately, Miller didn’t speak empty words was really the best for his time. Indianapolis 500 owes many things to him, because as a technical developer, he created and invented new and helpful developments. This made him an indirectly connected participant in a technical history success, which served to the people till the middle of the 1970s- over 50 years after its discovery time!
