As of this writing, the Miami Heat have lost 16 out of their last 18 games. Clearly something isn’t right for a team that is just a few years removed from their last NBA Championship. Dwayne Wade is still playing at an All-Star level, which he continues to prove day in and day out with his 24.8 points a game, but his supporting cast has failed to show up. “Shaq,” who will not be going to the All-Star games for the first time in 14 years, has declined, and probably rightfully so after a long hard career that has seen him beat up on his fair number of times. The Heat don’t appear to not be trying for Coach Pat Riley, they are just obviously ending up on the short end of the stick more often than not. The team is probably about ripe for a makeover, but if they aren’t willing to part with Wade, it’s not sure how much better than can get during midseason. In the early days of the Heat they were used to being the laughing stock of the league, and they might have to put up with that this year.
The Lakers suffered a serious setback when emerging center Andrew Bynum went out with an injury and will miss a significant amount of time. Kobe Bryant will attempt to take the team on his shoulders, as he has in years past, until the young Bynum returns, but each game is crucial. The Heat are on an obvious downswing, and that’s why I’ll pick the Lakers to take this one fairly easily, despite hurting a little bit on their own.
