NBA Sunday: Dallas Mavericks vs. Detroit Pistons

pro-basketball.jpg

Year after year both the Dallas Mavericks and the Detroit Pistons are right in the mix of things at the end of the year. This year appears to be no different. While the Mavericks aren’t putting up the same record as they did last year, they’ve also has to contend with the resurgence of teams that weren’t as good last year, such as the Los Angeles Lakers. The Detroit Pistons, on the other hand, are started to get the reputation that they only get up for the big games. The entire core of the team has been together for quite a few years, and after they’ve accomplished everything they could together, it’s only fair to expect that they could get a little bored during the regular season. As of this writing both teams have 13 losses, which is good enough to put both teams near the top of their divisions.

Dirk Nowitzki leads the Mavericks in points and rebounds with 22 and eight a game. Josh Howard is right behind him with 20.6 points a game. The Mavericks have won eight of ten, and overall have started to play as well as they did last year, where they finished the year with the best record in the league. They would take a worse record this year, as long as they could go farther then they did in last years playoffs, where they were upset in the first round by the Golden State Warriors. The Pistons have started to slide a little bit, going 4-6 in their last ten. Because of momentum alone I will take the Mavericks, despite the game being in Detroit.

NCAA Basketball Saturday: Kentucky Wildcats vs. Georgia Bulldogs

basketball2.jpg

Fans of Kentucky Wildcats basketball are sure to let their team have a bad year every now and then, but they are hoping that the winning tradition starts back up soon. As of this writing Kentucky is 8-9, and has a 2-2 record in the SEC conference. They are a respectable 7-3 at home, but in years past it may have taken them two or three years to lose three games at home. The Wildcats do have a very balanced scoring attack, with three players averaging 16 a game, but so far, that hasn’t translated into a winning formula. Despite all the negative talk to start this post, Kentucky is coming off it’s biggest win of the year, a 72-66 win against top-ten ranked Tennessee Volunteers. If this is a start of a turn around then the Bulldogs may be in trouble. However, the Wildcats have been unable to win on the road this year.

The 11-5 Bulldogs are led by junior guard Billy Humphrey. Humphrey is averaging 14.1 points a game. The Bulldogs have some unexpected losses, including those against Eastern Tennessee State and Tulane. They are currently on a two game winning streak, defeating Alabama and Arkansas in those last two. In college sports it seems like momentum is a big ticked to winning, and with the Wildcats coming off by far their best win of the year I am prone to lean towards them winning. They will need to somehow find a way to exceed these expectations on the road, but as of right now I think they will be able to find a way to continue their recent winning ways.

NCAA Basketball Saturday: (17) Pittsburgh Panthers vs. Connecticut Huskies

ncaa-basketball.jpg

The Big East conference has four teams currently in the top-25 rankings, and a team that is known for being in the top-25, the UConn Huskies, isn’t one of them.  The last couple of years has been a rebuilding progress, but they are a respectable 13-5 as of this writing.  Their 4-3 conference record is two games behind Georgetown, but only one game behind their Saturday opponent, the 17th ranked Pittsburgh Panthers.  The Huskies have only lost once at home this year, to tough Providence.  Junior forward Jeff Adrien has tried his best to keep his team in all the tough games, nearly averaging a double-double.

The Panthers are led by junior Sam Young and his 18.6 points a game.  Two games ago the Panters were unexpectedly knocked off by a Cincinnati team that is having a down year.  They have since bounced back in a 81-57 win over St. John’s, but the Cincy loss clearly came as a shock as Pittsburgh was right on the outskirts of the top-ten teams in the country.  A loss like that doesn’t have to set you back that bad, but in a tough division you have to win the games you are supposed to win, so it doesn’t hurt you as much if you lose a tight game to a better opponent later.  The Panthers will have a tough time ahead of them in Connecticut.  The Huskies have played most teams close, including number one ranked Memphis.  As of this moment I am leaning towards a Huskies upset.

NBA Friday: New Jersey Nets at Miami Heat

dogsbasketballb.jpg

This is easily the worst losing streak the Miami Heat have had to endure since Dwayne Wade and Shaquille O’Neal have been on the same team. As of this writing, the losing streak stands at 15. It isn’t as if they’ve been completely blown out by teams, though. On January 24th, they had a substantial lead over the defending champion San Antonio Spurs, before losing a one point heartbreaker. Shaq has been hurt the majority of the year, and even when he was healthy he seems to have lost a step, or two. Wade still continues to appear to be one of the best players in the NBA, averaging 25 a game, but it’s more than apparent, he can’t do it all himself. They’ve had to rely on career underachiever Udonis Haslem to take over for Shaq. Haslem has played well, but those are some big shoes to fill. It also didn’t help that back-up center, and defensive stopper, Alonzo Mourning went down with an injury that will most likely end his career. Tough year.

The Nets are doing a little better, but not much. Jason Kidd is rumored to be on the trading block, and recent reports are saying that him and coach Lawrence Frank is on the hot seat. After battling back after a slow start, the Nets have now dropped seven in a row. Someone has to win this game, and my guess will go to the Miami Heat. They’ve been really close to winning a game lately, and the suffering Nets could be just what the doctor order. Of course, one could say the same thing about the Heat regarding the Nets.

2008 Super Bowl: New England Patriots vs. New York Giants

football.jpg

The 2008 Super Bowl is here, and it pits the undefeated New England Patriots against the New York Giants, who finished the season, including the playoffs, winning ten road games in a row. Just like any big game, this game isn’t without its own personal storylines and questions. Below are some of the more important ones surrounding the big game:

Is Tom Brady’s foot really hurt?

There are many rumors surrounding the injury status of Brady’s foot, including one that says Brady is wearing a brace in an attempt to “psyche” out the Giants. I would think Brady’s success in big games would be enough to psyche out the Giants, but lets examine the injury a bit closer. In one picture posted on various news outlets he is seen wearing a soft cast over his sneaker. This actually caused the line to drop in Vegas. Later that day, Brady was seen a little more dressed up, including hard soled shoes, but minus the soft brace. It’s my guess that his foot will be just find for the Super Bowl, and he’s just wearing the cast during certain times of the day, when he isn’t enjoying a night on the town.

Will Randy Moss show up for the Super Bowl?

Randy Moss is averaging exactly one catch per playoff game. He has had to put up with some stingy defense the first two games in the playoffs. Also, for nearly the last half of the season, including the playoffs, the Patriots haven’t been blowing people out at the same rate. It’s my guess that Moss will show up. He’s been waiting his whole career for this spotlight. I feel Moss will show up the same way T.O. showed up for his first (and to this point, only) Super Bowl. Only difference is, I think the Patriots will win this one.

How are the Patriots such big favorites?

The final game of the season the Giants lost to the Patriots by only three points, in one of the most thrilling game of the years. However, they are listed as nearly 14 point underdogs to the Patriots. I actually agree with this. This game will be in Arizona, not on the Giants field, as was the previous meeting. This game has a lot more meaning then that game. The Patriots were 15-0 going for the undefeated season, but would you have considered them any less Super Bowl favorites if they lost that game? The Giants gained a lot of motivation in that game, but in the end it was still a loss. If the Giants go on to win the Super Bowl that game will be considered the most important loss in the history of the game.

What’s the better accomplishment: The Pats 18 and 0 or the Giants 10 game road winning streak?

While the Giants road success is very impressive, I don’t feel it compares to the Pats undefeated record. The Patriots won every game of the season, including those at home. The Giants had a poor home record, winning only two games. How does that equate to being a better statistic then the Patriots. The Giants have impressively won two games on the road during the playoffs, but they had to play on the road during the playoffs, while the Patriots earned their home field advantage by winning during the regular season. If the Giants beat the Patriots, where they are technically the road team, I will restate my position on the matter.

NBA Sunday: Cleveland Cavaliers vs. LA Lakers

basketballgame.jpg

The reemerging Los Angeles Lakers took a devastating hit this past week when they learned that their up and coming center, Andrew Bynum, will miss a minimum with a serious injury to his left knee. Not only does it take away his 13 points and 10 rebounds a game, but it takes away a defensive center presence that the Lakers have lacked since Shaq left for the east coast. The Lakers had one of the best records in the west, but by most NBA expert accounts it will be a miracle if they are able to keep it up through the next eight week. Kobe Bryant will try his best to keep his team afloat with his 27.7 points a game, but the task may even be too much for him.

The NBA eastern conference representatives of the NBA championships last year, have started a bit slow, but that can also be attributed to injuries. The Cavs have suffered through injuries of their own with Larry Hughes, and LeBron James. However, they are healthy now, and have won eight of their last ten games. James is averaging just less than 30 points a game. He also leads his team in assists (7.5) and steals (2) per game. Right now the Cavs are about six games behind the Detroit Pistons in the central division, but at this rate Rasheed Wallace and company may be starting to watch their backs.

It’s really a shame what happened to the Lakers. They were really playing well against all the tough teams in the league, and were even garnering some attention as the best team in the league. Because of the injury I will favor Cleveland in this one, but I would enjoy seeing this game with both teams at full strength.

NCAA Basketball Sunday: Michigan at (11) Michigan State

basketball1.jpg

This is always a fun game for natives of Michigan, as it pits the two most popular colleges against each other (Sorry Detroit Titans alum). However, almost always since the “Fab Five,” left the Wolverines in the mid-90’s, they have struggled to get back up into the upper echelon of the better teams in basketball. Since then the Michigan State Spartans have more than happily taken over that top spot of Michigan Basketball, even winning a national title. This year is no different, as Coach Tom Izzo once again has his boys playing good, and ranked 11th in the country. On the court, sophomore Raymar Morgan leads the team with 16.4 points and 6.8 rebounds a game. Their only two losses came against a very good UCLA team, and a three point loss in Iowa.

The Wolverines on the other hand are struggling though yet another season. As of this writing they are only 5-13, and only 1-5 in the very tough big ten conference. Even before they travel to Michigan State this Sunday, they have to go to Wisconsin and play the 11th ranked Badgers. That’s not exactly an easy schedule for a downtrodden team. Michigan’s scoring comes from freshman Manny Harris at the tune of 15.9 points a game.

Michigan has potential, but that won’t help them against the Spartans on Sunday. I guess it is no surprise, even though Michigan beat my school Radford, that I will be picking the Spartans. If anything it should be a good learning experience for a team that hopes to be better in the upcoming years.

NBA Sunday: Boston Celtics at Orlando Magic

basketball.jpg

In the beginning of the season when the Boston Celtics were red hot, the Orlando Magic was able to bring them back down to earth. The Celtics have gone on to the better record to this point in the season, but the Magic are chompin’ at the bit for another chance at the NBA front runners. Never has a big man caused so much attention since the Magic had a man called “Shaq” on their team. Dwight Howard is doing his best to fill those large shoes, averaging 22 points and 15 rebounds a game. In their last ten games they are only 4-6. Interestingly enough their away record is a nice 16-9, but at home they are only 9-8.

The Celtics are owners of the best record in the league, coming in at 32 and 6. In terms of Boston, it may be considered a mini-losing slump, having only won seven out of ten, after starting the season on a pace of that of the 72-10 Michael Jordan led Chicago Bulls. While that record may appear out of reach, the trio of Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, and Kevin Garnett all want to reach their first NBA title. The three of them are arguably on the list of the best players of this generation, and amazingly enough none of them have a championship ring.

Every team gets up to play the Celtics, and the Magic will want to prove their other victory wasn’t a fluke. However, because of Orlando’s tough luck at home, and the Celtics starting to come back together after a few injury scares, I’ll pick Boston to take care of this one.

NCAA Basketball Saturday: USC Trojans at Oregon Ducks

basketball-image.jpg

When the USC Trojans brought O.J. Mayo to campus they hoped he would make an immediate impact. He did, in some ways, giving them a set of games on national television, but after starting off hot, they have cooled off. The team still has a ton of potential, but with Mayo expected to leave for the NBA after just one season, it’s unsure if they will ever reach that unknown potential. However, that potential more than showed itself this past weekend, when they traveled into UCLA and defeated them by nine points. Mayo scored 16 points in the big upset, and has the Trojan fans once again believing in big things for it’s basketball team the same way they do for it’s football team. They’ve now won two in a row, but that comes after dropping five of eight. In the tough Pac-10 conference you need to play at a constant high level to have a chance to win the conference championship, and they’ll have to continue that against Oregon.

The Ducks have lost two games in a row, but have a perfect record at home. Over the last decade the Oregon Ducks have been one of the best home teams in all of the country. Oregon is led by senior Malik Hairston. Hairston is averaging exactly 18 points a game, and trying his best to keep his team in as many games as he can. Last week I wrote a story about this team against Washington State, and they ended up losing that game by nine. Previous to that they lost to Washington State. I also mentioned that they lost two surprising games to Nebraska and Oakland. Because of the inconsistency of this team, I will favor USC to be the first team to beat Oregon at home this year.

NBA Sunday: New Jersey Nets vs. Phoenix Suns

The New Jersey Nets bay have a .500 record as of this writing, but they are only one of six teams to have a winning record in the eastern conference. They started the season slow, leaving many Nets fans to fear that they may be trading Jason Kidd, but they have turned it around lately, winning seven out of their last ten ballgames. Also, Kidd is still comfortably in New Jersey where he leads the team in steals, assists, and rebounds. Remember, Kidd is a point guard, leading your team in rebounds is quite a feat for a point guard, but maybe not one so prone to getting triple-doubles. Leading scorer Richard Jefferson is currently listed as day-to-day on the injury report, but all signs point to yes that he will be back for this game.

The Suns are also winners of seven of their last ten, and once again continue to be one of the best teams in the west. Fans of the Suns are finally hoping this can be the year they make it to the NBA finals, but being in such a good conference, and seeing they are already falling behind the pack, it might be a hard thing to expect. Steve Nash has the team riding on his shoulders, leading his team, and the league with 12 assists a contest.

This game arguably features the best two point guards in the game. Being these teams only meet twice a year it’s a treat anytime you see them square off against each other. I will lean towards the Suns in this one.
