NCAA Football Saturday: (9) Oklahoma vs. (1) Missouri in San Antonio, Texas

oklahoma.jpg

The end of this crazy roller coaster of this season is almost over. Can you believe it? It seems that at least 10 teams have had a chance to hold on to a spot to play for a national championship, and now the latest team to join that list is the 11-1 Missouri Tigers. If they can win this ball game they will cement their spot in the national championship, but it won’t be easy.

For a good portion of the early part of the season the 10-2 Oklahoma Sooners were positioning for a shot at the championship, but two losses later they were dropped from the running. However if they win this game they will still find themselves in a major bowl game. The winner of this game is also the Big 12 champion, which is no easy task. Both of Oklahoma’s defeats came on the row and by seven points or less. The first loss came against Colorado the fifth game of the season, but Oklahoma quickly worked their way back up the rankings, thanks to nobody being able to hold on to the top two spots. Three weeks ago totally shattered their dreams when they lost to Texas Tech. While the Sooners were hoping for better things, they still have to be proud of the way freshman quarterback Sam Bradford has played. He has 32 touchdowns with only seven interceptions thrown. Not bad for playing in one of the toughest conferences in the nation. Bradford is also completing an amazing 70 percent of his passes. Can you imagine what his numbers will be like when he gets more experience? That must be a crazy thought for opponents down the road.

As I’ve failed to mention to this point, Missouri’s lone loss came to the hands of Oklahoma on October 13th 41-31, so Oklahoma will have a mental edge heading into the rematch. The Tigers have done very well since the loss, including most recently a win against then number two ranked, and undefeated, Kansas. The final score was 36-28, but the score wasn’t indicative of how the Tigers controlled the game. Missouri has a nice little quarterback too, one who may be walking away with the Heisman Trophy this year, Chase Daniel. The junior has passed for 33 TD’s with nine interceptions, and has also completed 70 percent of his passes. Daniels has passed for over 300 yards in eight games, and has failed to throw for less than 200 in any contest. In the Kansas victory he completed an amazing 40 of 49 passes while connecting on three touchdowns.

If Oklahoma wins it will shake up the championship even more. Currently West Virginia is at number two with Ohio State at three. I guess Ohio State would take over two with West Virginia at three, but who knows with the way the BCS works? I like to think Missouri finds a way to win this game however, in march on to the national championship.

NCAA Friday Basketball: Iowa State vs. Oregon State

iowa-state.jpg

A pair of teams looking to try to find away to punch their ticket to the “Big Dance” will square off in an effort to make their resumes look that much better. Iowa State is 2-2 after dropping their last two. They won their first two contests against less than stellar opposition, but when they stepped up against Bradley and Minnesota they were promptly shut down. They didn’t play awful in those games, losing to Bradley by nine and Minnesota by 10, but they will play much tougher teams in their conference so they would like to turn it around before those games begin. The Cyclones are led bed 6’10” freshman Craig Brackens. Brackens is leading the team in points with 14.8 per contest.

Oregon State has had a complete opposite start to the season. They dropped their first two games, one a complete upset to Alaska Fairbanks, and have since won three in a row. Iowa State has played the tougher competition, but Oregon State appears to be more on a roll right now. The Beavers are led by Seth Tarvers 15.4 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. With their upset loss behind them, and with them playing at home I think they have found the right time to play a team that may be a little better then them. I’m picking Oregon State to walk away in this one by a narrow win of seven points or less.

NCAA Friday Basketball: (6) Washington St. at Baylor

washington-st.jpg

An early season match up between undefeated teams’ pits the sixth ranked Washington State Cougars versus the Baylor Bears. Both of these schools aren’t teams you are used to seeing among the best, but both teams have a little bit of talent this year. The experience on Washington States team is unmatched by just about any other team in the nation. They start three juniors and two seniors and an additional four juniors or seniors see substantial time off the bench. Leading the team in points score is Derrick Low with 15.5 points per game. Guards Kyle Weaver and Taylor Rochestie also average over ten points a game. Unlike many teams, this team is predicated on everyone getting in on the action, as opposed to just one player at the top.

Baylor is undefeated at 5-0. They’ve already beat good two fairly decent basketball teams, Notre Dame and Winthrop. Winthrop, if you recall, has advanced well into the NCAA tournament the last couple of years. Baylor has three players averaging ten points or more, led by the 14.0 by junior guard Curtis Jerrells. Much like Washington State, Baylor also uses a big rotation, with nine players seeing 15 minutes or more per contest.

Tough game to pick here. The Cougars seem to have the more talented team, but Baylor has gotten off to a great start, and playing at home. I expect the Bears to give the Cougars everything they can handle, but I predict a close Washington State win.

NCAA College Football Thursday: Rutgers at Louisville

rutgers.jpg

At the beginning of the season many college football experts thought that this game could have huge implications in deciding who will play for the national championship. Instead the Rutgers (7-4, 3-3 Big East) are trying to win one more game in order to maybe get a little better of a bowl game. Louisville (5-6 2-4 Big East) on the other hand is just trying to finish the season with a .500 record and a chance to play in any bowl game at all. Despite the poor records, these teams still have a lot of talent on their teams, including some that will most likely be playing for NFL teams in the near future.

If the Scarlet Knights could have found a way to win just a couple more games then running back Ray Rice would be among the top candidates to win the Heisman trophy. Rice should still get an invite to the ceremony, because his numbers have still be simply fabulous. He has rushed for 17 touchdowns, while averaging just over five yards per carry. He has also been more of a force out of the backfield in this his junior year, catching 22 balls for an average of 9.7 yards a grab. Rice has rushed for over 100 yards in all but three games. In two of those three games he was just in a few yards under the 100 yard mark. He exploded for 243 yards against Army two weeks ago.

Another player that would have been more considered for big postseason awards had his team done better is Louisville’s Brian Brohm. This senior will most likely be starting for an NFL team next year, and it’s because of his phenomenal numbers. He has completed over 65 percent of his passes while throwing over 100 more attempts then any of his previous years. He is most likely going to get over 4000 yards passing and already has 29 passing touchdowns. What is up this year is his interceptions, which stand at 12. But, he’s been forced to throw the ball more in an effort to try to play catch up while his team is behind. The Cardinals have lost two in a row. They lost by a touchdown to West Virginia, who is now slated to play for the national championship and they were blown out by a much improved South Florida team. As mentioned, Louisville must find away to win this game to be considered bowl eligible.

I believe the Rutgers will take this one. It may be Ray Rice’s last big chance to shine on a national televised stage, and as he has shown in the past, he won’t let us down. However, both of these teams could be a little downtrodden considering they thought they would be playing for much higher stakes at this point in their respective seasons. However, both teams have something to play for, and hopefully that comes out on Thursday.

NBA Friday: Orlando Magic vs. Phoenix Suns

suns.jpg

If you are an NBA fan then you can’t really find a better way to end your week. The 12-3 Orlando Magic, are playing great on the road (7-1) and have the distinction of being the only team to beat the red hot Boston Celtics this year. The Phoenix Suns are also playing well, just as expected. A part of their success this season can be attributed to how well the often injured Grant Hill has been playing. Hill was a bit of a mystery coming into this season, mainly because he’s missed more games then he’s played in recent years, but 15.2 points per game this year has made him a welcome addition. Of course, it always helps when two time MVP Steve Nash in the one passing you the ball. Nash is averaging 10 assists per game while also averaging nearly 20 points per game. The entire starting line up for the Suns is averaging over 15 a game, a recipe for success.

Orlando Magic once had a big game by the name of Shaq leading them, now they have a big guy by the name of Dwight leading them, Dwight Howard, that is. Howard is averaging 25.5 points per game, 14.5 rebounds, and just under 3 blocks. He has the team playing better than it has in years, and they seem to be ready to make a serious run for an NBA title. The game is being played in Phoenix, where the Suns play great, so that’s why I will favor them in this one.

NBA Friday: Boston Celtics at Miami Heat

celtics.jpg

Because of their new talent laden club viewers will have a chance to see the Boston Celtics on cable television just about every game they play. That right used to be reserved for the Miami Heat, but they are struggling a bit this year. Dwayne Wade has been slowed down by injury, and Shaquille O’Neal may just be slowing down from old age. The Heat are 3-10, including just a 1-5 record at home. Despite the poor record, which sees them in last place of their division, the team feels they will still be able to turn it around later in the season. If they are not yet ready to turn it around against the 11-1 Boston Celtics, then things could get ugly quit. The “new big three,” Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, and Kevin Garnett are all averaging over 20 points and the entire team is playing like they are on a mission. Some Celtics fans were concerned that Rajon Rondo would be unable to lead a team of this caliber from the point guard position, but he has quietly averaged just under 10 points a game, to go along with 5.2 assists, while making very limited mistakes. People were also concerned with the bench, but Eddie House has been shooting lights out, and James Posey, a former starter, has embraced the role of a bench player just fine. Tough game for the Heat to win in my opinion. I expect the Celtics to roll in this one.

NFL Monday Night Football: (0-10) Miami Dolphins vs. (7-3) Pittsburgh Steelers

steelers1.jpg

Up until this past Sunday this game seemed like a sure win for the Steelers. That was before they lost to the 1-8 Jets. Also, it isn’t as if the Dolphins have been blown out in every game. Seven of the Dolphins ten loses have come by ten points or less. By all accounts the Dolphins appear to still be given it all despite injury after injury. First it was Trent Green that went down in week five with an apparent career ending concussion. Just two weeks after that Miami leading rusher Ronnie Brown went down from a season ending injury. Leading the Dolphins at quarterback after the Green injury was Cleo Lemon, but only three touchdowns and two interceptions later they made the move to John Beck for their loss this past weekend to the Philadelphia Eagles. Beck went 9 for 22 with 109 passing yards. It is unsure which player will start, but it’s no secret that the Dolphins are hoping for good things out of Beck, so he may get the nod the rest of the way. Their best offensive threat has been Chris Chambers. Chambers has caught 31 balls but zero touchdowns. It’s been that kind of year. They do get often suspended Ricky Williams back in a couple of weeks. Maybe he can help lead them to their first victory.

Prior to the unexpected Jets loss, the Steelers had been rolling. Many experts believe that they may be a team that can seriously give the New England Patriots a run for their money. That game is three games away, and in order to prove themselves worthy they can get a good start on Monday Night football against the Fins. “Big” Ben Rothlisberger has made a nice return to form after struggling a bit last year. He has a remarkable quarterback rating of 110.2 for the year. His career rating is just over 92. His main target has been Santonio Holmes, who has found the end zone six times in his 34 catches. Tight end Heath Miller has also added six touchdowns.

By all accounts Pittsburgh should win this game. They are playing at home, and are much better on both offense and defense. They are coming off the tough loss, but they have a great leader that should be able to have them bounce back well. I’m taking the Steelers by something like 35-14.

NBA Basketball Friday: Houston Rockets vs. Miami Heat

miami-heat.jpg

While the Houston Rockets are doing fairly well with a tough part of their schedule, the Miami Heat are struggling to pick up a win against anybody. Dwayne Wade has returned to the line-up, which is more then a good sign for the Heat, but Shaq may be on his last legs. Despite appearing in great physical shape “The Diesel” is putting up career lows. He is only averaging 14.6 points per game for the 1-7 Heat. Leading the team is scoring is streaky shooter Ricky Davis. Davis has always been close to being an elite NBA player, but his mouth has gotten him in trouble and he has the reputation of being a cancer in NBA locker rooms. Right now though, the team needs him and his 15.3 points per game to help pull the Heat out of the gutter. Houston, of course is led by Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming. While the Rockets are playing on the road in this one, their competition in the West has been far greater then anything the Heat can offer them at this point of the season. Wade is taking his time working himself back into the starting rotation, and word is he still may be suffering from lingering effects of his injury. I’m picking the Rockets in this one fairly easy, but being the NBA, anything can happen. Too much firepower right now is what separates these two squads. When they meet again later in the season it may be a different story.

Thanksgiving Day NCAA Basketball: UCF at (23) Villanova

ucf.jpg

Villanova has been right on the edge of big things in college basketball for the last few years. On Thanksgiving day they hope to showcase their goods in front of a national audience to help solidify themselves as a national powerhouse. The Wildcats are 1-0 this year, having defeated Stony Brook 86-64. No, Stony Brook isn’t a good team, but any win Villanova can pick up during the early season will prepare them for a tough Big East schedule that currently has six teams in the top 25 rankings. In the opening game of the season Shane Clark, a junior forward scored a career high 25 points to go along with seven rebounds. Freshman Malcolm Grant added 16 points, a very good start for your first game at the college level. UCF is also 1-0. Their win came against Nevada, generally a pretty tough team. They eked out a 63-60 win in that one. Leading the way for the Knights was guard David Noel with 14 points and nine rebounds. UCF plays in Conference USA, which they may be able to do well in, but I think Villanova will be too much for the Knights in this one. Although, the Nevada win was a very impressive one, so maybe I shouldn’t be too shocked if the Knights pull it out, but I’m fairly confident in my decision.

Thanksgiving Day NCAA Basketball: (22) North Carolina St. vs. Rider

unc-300.gif

On paper this looks like an easy victory for the 22nd ranked team in the nation, North Carolina State. But, when you factor in that it’s Thanksgiving, and this team will be on the road, it might not be so cut and dry. In the pros the players are usually professional enough to handle business on the road no matter what day it is. However, these players are still kids and are not quite used to playing on the road during holidays, especially during the early segments of the year. This game will actually be played in Orlando at the Old Spice Classic, so some of worrying may be done by Rider as well, but Rider would most likely play them on a neutral court then at NC State. But, the Broncs are 0-1 this year, having lost their season opener to Murray State, 66-65. Guard Ryan Thompson had a great game though, scoring 23 points with eight rebounds. Also adding 21 points was Harris Mansell, so they do have some scorers. The Wolfpack defeated William and Mary in their opener, led by 31 points by J.J. Hickson. The Wolfpack play in the tough ACC and in order to keep up with Duke and UNC they will continue to need play like this from Hickson. The talent gap will be apparent in this one, despite both teams playing on the road. I think North Carolina State takes this one in fairly easy fashion.
